Champion Sound - Crystal Fighters

Yes. I've failed in this. It was only a matter of time. It turns out that I have a busier life than expected (who'd have thunked it?!) and a daily blog is nigh on impossible, especially when your internet decides that it hates you as mine has. Damn.
But here's my song of the day for Thursday 24th of January 2013 and from now on, I'll do this when  I can but don't get mad at me when I can't!
:)
I only 'discovered' this song recently because of a show called Cougar Town that you should all watch because it's highly hilarious. But here it is. I give you - Champion Sound by Crystal Fighters.
The video is ... weird to say the least. They're a great band though, and this is such a very cheery song that just makes me happy. You know sometimes you just listen to something and instantly like it for whatever reason? Well that's what happened with this song. I just loved it from the second I heard it and googled the lyrics so I could download it. Yes, I may be sad. I don't care. My ipod is that little bit more complete because of it.
I really like that this is kind of clubby but with a real holiday twist that is kind of reggae and feels like it should be listened to on a small island in a bikini. Such a holiday tune!
And boy does it get in your head! This is a band that I will definitely be listening to more of!
I don't really have much more to say about this one! I'm slacking, I know. Sorry, fellas.
But just listen to the song! It'll make your day better !
Favourite Lyrics :
I wanna find my girl.
Love will be amazing.
Champion Sound.

If you want to check them out, their twitter is @CrystalFighters so go drop them a tweet. They're also pretty bloody good at following back, so you may be lucky :)

2-4-6-8-Motorway - Tom Robinson Band

Yes, I said this will be a daily blog and yes, I have missed out two days. Simple reason being that I wasn't at home and didn't have a laptop and had infuriatingly limited internet access. I was going to go back and fill in my missing days and had even decided songs, but you know what? I don't think that would count so no. That's not happening. Instead I shall say that I hope you've had a lovely weekend and present you with today's Song of the Day :
2-4-6-8 Motorway by Tom Richardson Band.

It's a song from the 70s and is a real "mans" song about trucking and being on the open road (despite Tom Robinson actually being bisexual). But it's really catchy and I actually woke up with it in my head and there it has stayed. Overall, I wouldn't say it's an amazing song - the lyrics aren't exactly inspired and other than the pretty good guitar solo in the middle, it's got a pretty simple and repetitive base etc. But that doesn't mean I don't love it. It really reminds me of one of my friends that's pretty much attached to her car and loves driving around blasting music and shouting along, so now I always think of her when it plays. The chorus was made to shout along to and despite me saying it's not a very good song, it really really is.

Favourite Lyrics :
2 - 4 - 6 - 8
Ain't ever too late.
Me and my radio truckin' on through the night.
3 - 5 - 7 - 9
On a double white line.
Motorway sun comin' up with the morning light.

Here With Me - The Killers

Love Tim Burton? Love The Killers? Me too. Dear reader, I give you...
Here With Me.
This is probably nothing new to Killers fans, but although I was aware that they had a new song out, I hadn't really heard it. And then I found out that Tim Burton had directed the video and I made a mental note to watch it as soon as possible. That was a month ago. As you may be able to guess, I only actually got round to watching the video today and BOOM. Song of the day! Sorted.
As you would probably expect from The Killers, it's kind of haunting and a little bit creepy and a little bit bitter and a lot lovely. I don't know who the lead singer of the band is (I'm too lazy to even Google it. Sorry!) but he is just asdfghjkl. Yes, asdfghjkl. Lovely! Well done, you. Congratulations on your voice.
Now, this probably doesn't count - in fact, what am I talk about, of course this counts. It's my blog, what I want to count counts - but this is partly because of the video too. Directed by Tim Burton, it was bound to be weird and wonderful and make you go "Whuuuut?". I don't really know why, but I love the video! The boy, Craig Roberts, (who isn't actually a boy at all) is just so creepy and weird and was born to be a Burton character! I actually really remember him from Tracy Beaker and Young Dracula from when I was a kid and getting a bit too old to be watching kids programs, but hey who. He's actually in some pretty big films now. Life for the the other half, ey. It also has Winona Ryder (apparently she's pretty big too? ;) ) in it so, you know. It can't be bad!
I love this song and I can't wait to get it on la Ipod and blast it in my headphones.
Favourite Lyrics :
You said "Come on baby, it'll be alright"
I must have been a  fool 'till the bitter end.
Now I hold onto hope to have you back again,
I'd bargain and I'd fight,
But there's another world that you're living in tonight.

Until tomorrow,

The Other Woman - Caro Emerald

Take my hand for a second and stroll down the steps of an underground bar where there's dim lighting and perfume and red and Martini glasses and oh, peering across the bar through the thick smoke coming from cigerettes in cigerette holders that you find only adds to the atmosphere, who's that crooning into an old school microphone on the small stage?
Her name is Caro Emerald and the song is The Other Woman.

You don't get ,music like this much any more. It's not too mainstream although she had an album - "Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor" - that was pretty successful, she's not very well known in England. Caro is a Dutch singer that has a voice that is just so incredibly beautiful. She doesn't need complicated melodies or overpowering music to make her songs enchanting and her voice just suits the whole "cheated  woman" or "bitter love" so well. Don't get me wrong, she has a number of songs that are pretty damn cheery and I love to listen to when getting ready to go out etc, but I personally like her slightly darker songs more; the ones with the deep bases and haunting saxophones. Gorgeous.
I couldn't decide between The Other Woman and Just One Dance for the song today because they've both been played constantly since I got home, but I eventually decided that The Other Woman was the lucky track. The story being told is lovely and you can just picture her warning off a younger woman who thinks she has her claws in her man. It all seems very sordid and there's always been the picture of downtown Chicago 20's style gangster wife in the back of my head when I've listened to it. There is definitely a lot of smoke and darkness and black and white there. It's just one of those songs that has that beautiful dark undertone that I honestly cannot resist.
Caro has a beautiful voice and I love the old jazzy feel to her music that seems like she would have been performing with a horn band in pinstripe suits and shades, her face half concealed by an oversized hat. It's a sort of modern/old mix that I would really love to hear more of.
Favourite Lyrics :
At the start of his goodbye,
Do you ever realize,
That you never get the chance,
 All you get is alibis.
When smoke beings to fade,
And you're standing face to face,
Does he kiss you in the way to say,
You're the other Woman?

Female of the Species - The Sparks

Bring yourself back to 1996. Little Megan was bopping around at the grand old age of 2 and completely ignoring this song because, hey. I was 2. But I love it now and although to me, it sounds more 70s then 90s, it's an absolute tune. Throughout there are some pretty strange sound effects if you listen closely, like an old record player scratching a little and a sci-fi sounding instrument playing in the back, but it all makes for a pretty weird and wonderful track.
For some weird reason, I love the way that the girls are dancing in the video too. It's all tres James Bond-esque.
There's something about the odd sound that always gets it stuck in my head and it's because a friend (surprising me with her flawless musical taste yet again. When will I learn?) tweeted the lyrics that it's been in my head since last night. Thanks, Emily.
The strange deep wooden xylophone that makes up a good proportion of the music mixed with the leads slightly strange vocals makes me think of Latino music and makes it a really bizarre science fictioney-latinoey-jazzy track that just. Won't. Leave. Me. Alone.
And yes, it's very right. The Female of the species is more deadly than the male ;)

Favourite Lyrics :
Frankenstein and Dracula have nothing on you.
Jekyll and Hyde join the back of the queue.
The female of the species is more deadly than the male.
Oh she wants to conquer the world completely,
But first she'll conquer me discreetly.
The female of the species is more deadly than the male.

Crazy Screwed up Lady - Cosmo Jarvis

Quick note on how this is going to work:-
Each day, I will (try to) post my "Song of the Day". I didn't want my other blog  - link in the "Links to me" page -  to come too clogged up with music as it was in danger of doing, so I've decided to start a blog dedicated to the songs that I love. The song of the day will be chosen for different reasons; whatever's been stuck in my head, a song I particularly love, one that's reflected my day, one that I think more people should hear, a review of a new one. Whatever. But whatever it is, I hope you enjoy it!

So the honour of my very first "Song of the Day" goes to an artist that I am not going to assume for a single second that you have heard of and I'm not going to say you should listen to him because you should do what you want to do, but I would highly recommend him. He's a quite small time singer from Devon (same as me! :D ) called Cosmo Jarvis and I was introduced to him by some friends that are really into their small time bands/singers. He's had a couple albums out that I find have really varied songs on, the style of which change so much that I think he's open to a pretty wide audience.

Crazy Screwed Up Lady - Cosmo Jarvis

I know Cosmo isn't to everyone's taste, but I love his voice. This song was probably one of the first that I fell in love with and it's one I keep coming back to. Although the actual lyrics are bordering on dark, in terms of sound, it's really upbeat and sounds so cheerful - perfect for popping in your headphones and blasting. The chorus is one that is just amazing for singing shouting along to and I'm not really sure why, but the drumming really makes me happy! Well done drummer.

This is just a really upbeat, catchy song that will have your friends wondering why you're randomly singing "I think you're gonna be okay you crazy screwed up la-a-a-a-dy" because you will be - get out of my head!!

Favourite Lyrics:
And every step she takes,
Her tears make her appear like a pretty mime.
No one blinks.

Ps. You can find Cosmo on twitter at @CosmoJarvis if anyone is interested
